What we do

Grinding depth matched to what's going on top.

Stump grinding is the standard method for removing a tree stump after a tree has been felled. The grinder reduces the stump and the major surface roots to wood chip below ground level, leaving the area ready for re-use. It is faster, less invasive, and less expensive than excavation, particularly near paving, structures, or other tree roots.

Grinding depth is set by what's going on top of the void. 150mm below finished grade is sufficient for lawn or shallow garden bed planting. 300mm is required if pavers, decking, or a concrete slab will sit over the stump. For new tree planting in the same location, we recommend a depth of at least 450mm with the wood chip removed and replaced with screened topsoil, to avoid competition from old root decay.

Machine selection is driven by access and stump size. Our narrow-track grinder fits through 800mm gates and operates without damaging turf with the boards down. Larger machines handle stumps over 600mm in diameter. We confirm gate width and access from a photo before quoting.

What's included as standard

Below-grade grind

150mm for lawn, 300mm for paving. We'll ask what's going on top.

Chip handling

Left in the hole as mulch by default. Removal is $50 to $150 extra depending on volume.

Site clean-up

Chip swept off paths, lawn raked, surface left ready for the next step.

Access protection

Boards across the lawn where the grinder needs to cross. Drop-sheets on paving.

What it costs

Per stump, not per inch. No surprise add-ons.

How we work

The standard process.

Step 01

Send a photo + gate width

Most stumps quote off a photo and the side gate measurement. We'll come back the same day.

Step 02

Free site visit if needed

For trickier jobs we'll walk the site. Some stumps just need eyes on them.

Step 03

Written quote in your inbox

Per-stump pricing, chip handling option, timing. Usually next-day for grinding work.

Step 04

Grinding day

Turn up, lay boards, grind, sweep, leave. Most jobs finished in under two hours.
